Some Say, that wargaming is just a hobby for nerds… but you would be wrong!
All we know is that Wargaming is a serious business… it requires skill, strategy, and a fair bit of luck.
But Wargaming Clubs are the pace where you can really put your skills to the test!
It's never about just winning or losing - Oh no… wargaming clubs are mainly about camaraderie, a community with a shared interest that comes together with the aim of sharing their passion.
Members of these clubs attend to swap stories, share tips and techniques, and geek out rolling dice and showing off their favourite models.
Axes and Ales is such club. It has a very active tabletop gaming community that meets in Thornbury, a Northern Suburb of inner Melbourne.
The club meets every Tuesday night at the local Thornbury Bowls Club between 6:30pm - 11:00pm.
Axes and Ales has close to 100 members. And all the proceeds from membership are put right back into the club’s resources. This means that they’re always looking to enhance terrain, boards, tables and other amenities, so that they better serve the members.
The club also allows members to reserve tables and terrain so they can guarantee they have a table to play on before heading down to the club.
Axes and Ales held their first Warhammer 40k tournament in 2022 - Halloween Havoc - and it was an absolute triumph! But the club isn't stopping there - there are some exciting events lined up, including the eagerly anticipated Bring & Buy extravaganza.
Axes and Ales isn't limited to just being a Warhammer 40K Club either...
They play all sorts of tabletop gaming! There’s people regularly playing Kill Team, or games on the blood-soaked fields of Blood Bowl, and then ther’s those who tackle the dangers of the spires of Necromunda.
If you want to challenge yourself with the tactical prowess then there’s always some Bolt Action action happening, or the mind-bending sci-fi skirmishes of Infinity - even the superhero slugfest of Marvel Crisis Protocol can take the stage - each of these and more are played at Axes and Ales.
There's always something exciting happening at the club right acros the Club’s gaming calendar - with Blood Bowl leagues, Warhammer 40k Crusades, Gallodark Expeditions for Kill Team!
Of course, it wouldn't be much of a gaming club without plenty of terrain and tables to play on. Axes and Ales have amassed a rather impressive collection of terrain and mats. Thankfully, they have helped out at Arc40k by loaning some of their table tops to the event weekend.
The Club’s collection covers almost any game system - with more then 30 tables to choose between, you'll never be short of a battlefield to place your gaming minis onto.
It's free to join in and get a game… Memberships gives you the ability to book terrain and tables for Tuesday gaming night.
So, if you're in Melbourne's inner North and looking for a regular, active, friendly, and enthusiastic group of people to play with, head down to club night at Axes and Ales - grab a drink, introduce yourselves, have a chat and organise a game!
